Chair in Middle English comes from the Greek word Kathedra, referring to seat.
A chair or a seat is a form of our reality , in Platonic epistemology, forms are remembered not learned. Plato purported that in a world of intelligible forms that they are known to the soul already before we learn or perceive these intelligible forms. That perception is not knowledge but a remembering of already held knowledge from our previous reincarnated souls.
With this in mind I propose to create a chair that follows the knowledge of my previous souls. One that has no plan and will be a “remembered” construction. Built of recycled wood, nails and screws I will create a chair of my mind's recollection.
I will then paint the chair with Acrylic using reference photos that I have taken in my photography practice. These photos are digital captures of perceived knowledge and will be then reimagined using my mind's recollection.
This work is accompanied by Kathedra (paintings).
